There's no more iconic connection to Towers than Teddy. In 2010 Peter Skewes (Toy Buyer) writes about how it all came to be.
"During a buying trip to Taiwan in '86, Karen Baillargeon and myself dropped into a small plush manufacturers showroom. Karen was looking for an item that we could use at Towers to compete with the Charity Bear that the Bay was promoting. We found the Teddy Sac in a corner and got a quote. Karen stuffed the sample into her bag and we carried on.
When we got back to the office, our boss, Dave Boyer, showed the item to Don Beaumont and that was that. We imported them by the container load, 1000's and 1000's of them, and sold out each year for next 3 years (until Zellers took over).
I think it was the Canadian Junior Diabetes Foundation that was the beneficiary of a donation from the sale of each one. Zellers took over, and in their wisdom, decided not to continue the item !!! "
